Certifications Back Our Personal Care Solutions

In an industry where words like “natural” and “organic” are frequently touted, transparency matters. That’s why CP Kelco relies on the backing of well-respected, third-party certifications with strict standards. They provide our customers with an extra layer of trust that our ingredients are aligned with your goals of product safety, animal welfare, ethics and origin.

The mission behind the COSMOS® seal is to create an international standard for identifying natural and organic products. The seal ensures environmentally friendly production and processing as well as responsible use of natural resources and a respect for biodiversity.

NATRUE® certification, from the International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association, signifies that a product contains only 100% natural, natural-derived or nature-identical substances.

B Corp. Certification from the nonprofit B Lab is one of the most trusted in the world. It speaks to a company’s overall environmental and social impact. Using a rigorous assessment, it verifies that the company operates with transparency, integrity and is structured to be accountable to all stakeholders, from employees to suppliers and the planet. Zanea Seaweed Co., our seaweed raw material supplier for the GENU® Carrageenan family recently achieved this honor – a first for this space.

In addition, all our manufacturing facilities meet the strict requirements to be halal and kosher certified.

Innovative Concepts in Ambient Drinking Yogurt

Ambient drinking yogurts (ADY) are fermented dairy or plant protein-based products which undergo an extra heat treatment that provides them with the benefit of a long shelf life:

  • Less food is lost to spoilage. Many yogurt products are thrown out simply because of the short “best by” date on the label so this is a giant step towards reducing food waste.
  • Consumers appreciate the convenience of having a protein snack that doesn’t require refrigeration. This means it can easily be stored in a school lunchbox, backpack or gym bag without worry.
  • By extension, a longer shelf life can mean improved production and distribution efficiencies, no special storage requirements, raw material and energy savings, as well as increased profitability for manufacturers.

Innovation shines in the ADY category through a variety of novel flavors, textures and formats that appeal to all ages. Here are the trends we are seeing:

  1. Functional ADY: Supporting consumers’ health and wellness with protein, dietary fiber, digestion and immunity support, and vitamins.
  2. ADY with Particulates: Fruit pieces, grains and other additions provide nutrition as well as a fun, dual texture experience.
  3. Clean Label-Friendly: Simpler formulations with no added sugar or reduced sugar and “natural” ingredient claims.
  4. Variety of Textures & Packaging Preferences: From refreshingly light to rich and indulgent textures to reach every consumer’s taste, as well as new aseptic cartons, pouches and PET (polyethylene terephthalate) packaging. This personalization trend addresses everyone’s preferred consumption occasion with convenience.
  5. Expanded ADY Applications: The extension of ADY applications from consumer packaged goods (CPG) to the foodservice channel creates new innovation opportunities, such as milk-tea-juice-yogurt drinks, offering a tasty balance of sweet and sour with protein to meet consumer demand for healthier beverages at the chain store level.

Formulating for Ambient Drinking Yogurt

CP Kelco can help formulators innovate using a portfolio of nature-based ingredient solutions for dairy yogurt or plant-based yogurt alternatives, such as…

  • GENU® Pectin for protein protection during heat treatment, stability, suspension, texture enhancement, syneresis control and a pleasant mouthfeel.
  • KELCOGEL® Gellan Gum for suspension of particles and insoluble minerals, syneresis control and added texture.
  • NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber, is upcycled from citrus peels, a byproduct of the juice industry. It supports fiber intake as well as starch replacement, syneresis control, body and mouthfeel.

How NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber Adds Value to Ice Cream & Plant-Based Ice Cream Alternatives

Consumers today are looking for products that are “good for you” and “good for the planet” too. This includes their favorite indulgent treats like ice cream, where the megatrends of health and sustainability have merged to become “healthy indulgences.” Knowing that consumers may perceive a product with more ingredients listed on the label as less healthy, CP Kelco is happy to introduce a new solution for ice cream manufacturers: NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber, which may help you remove up to four commonly used stabilizers on your label. It can help you clean up your label without giving up the creamy, indulgent mouthfeel that consumers crave.

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber can help you develop new hardpack, bar and soft-serve ice cream products by providing an upcycled, recognizable, single ingredient alternative to industry standard blends while maintaining quality, potentially improving melt resistance, increasing firmness and improving costs without impacting the manufacturing process.

An Upcycled Ingredient

As we all know, food waste is big problem in the industry. Upcycling helps to prevent food waste by using discarded food to create another high-quality product. Upcycled from citrus peels, a byproduct of the juice industry, NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber is the first Upcycled Certified® citrus fiber on the market.* In ice cream, it also helps to improve melt resistance to combat the fluctuating temperatures of shipping and transit, which can lead to food waste. Unlock Affordability: 6 Ways to Get More Value Out of Your Formulations

In today’s dynamic market, consumers are looking for more out of their food and beverages. They have an eye on health and wellbeing, sustainability, affordability – and indulgence. In a nutshell, they want it all! How can product developers deliver on these challenging demands and innovate with transparency?

We have developed six strategies to help you unlock added value in your formulations. See how efficient multifunctional, nature-based ingredients can be in solving top challenges without compromising the consumer experience.

1. Reduce sugar (and improve your Nutri-Score)

Between consumer requests, government regulations, taxes, scoring systems and fluctuating sugar prices, there is a rise in demand for products with less sugar.

Product developers know that it can be challenging to reformulate with less sugar and still achieve the pleasurable eating and drinking experience that consumers crave. But healthier indulgence is possible. In fruit-flavored drinks, our GENU® Pectin is great for adding viscosity and enhancing fruity flavors, and our NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber can help compensate for body and mouthfeel that is usually lacking in reduced-sugar content. GENU® Pectin is also tolerant to calcium and minerals in functional gummies, which helps enable sugar-free formulations with soft and chewy texture, excellent flavor release and heat stability. In reduced sugar beverages, like fruit juices and dairy alternatives, our KELCOGEL® Gellan Gum can add long-term stability and suspension, and our KELTROL® Xanthan Gum works well across a wide pH range, both adding full-bodied mouthfeel for a better drinking experience.

2. Cut the fat

For flavor, texture, mouthfeel and moisture control, fat and oils play a critical role in the formulations of baked goods, condiments and beverages. However, health concerns and surging prices have both customers and consumers asking for ways to use less.

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber can help product developers extend or eliminate fats and butter in baked goods, without compromising structure and moisture. Its high water-holding and gelling properties can also support starch replacement in condiments as well as improve texture. In low-fat dairy applications, SIMPLESSE® Microparticulated Whey Protein Concentrate add creaminess as well as extra protein. SLENDID® Specialty Pectin, which was developed to be a label-friendly fat reducer, helps to provide creamy texture and mouthfeel to low-fat and non-fat condiments, beverages, dairy products and more.

3. Preserve your fruit supply

Consumers find fruit-flavored drinks to be an enjoyable way to get in an extra serving of fruits, vegetables and immunity-boosting vitamins. However, these beverages are dependent on Mother Nature and crops subject to varying climate conditions and other factors that affect price.

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber can help stretch your fruit supply without compromising the drinking experience. Upcycled from citrus peels, an abundant byproduct of the juice industry, this easily recognizable ingredient offers a full-circle approach to build back mouthfeel so formulators can reduce reliance on citrus pulp and sugar. In addition to being a clean label-friendly solution, NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber helps meet market demands while supporting your ingredient reduction and sustainability goals.

4. Let us help you use less egg

There are many reasons why a product developer might want to reduce the use of eggs in formulations. Egg supply and pricing continues to be volatile so saving money and conserving your supply would be prudent. You may also want to reduce potential allergens in your product or explore vegan line extensions.

KELCOGEL® Gellan Gum stabilizes vegan liquid egg alternatives, balancing mouthfeel and resilience so it is versatile enough to use for breakfast dishes or baking. NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber can also help reduce or replace eggs in baked goods and condiments, including in a vegan mayonnaise-like* dressing.

The Community that Carrageenan Built

It’s a mild and sunny day on the island state of Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania. A group of women are gathered in front of ZANEA Seaweed Company to say hello, pick up supplies and start work at the seaweed farms that dot the shores.

Known in Swahili as mwani, seaweed cultivation involves tying seedlings onto ropes that are submerged in the water enough for it to be covered at low tide. Some of the crops are ready to be harvested and laid on screens to dry in the sun before being packed in sacks and exported to CP Kelco’s plant in Skensved, Denmark. The red seaweed tended by these women will soon become GENU®, GENUGEL®, GENULACTA®, GENU® Texturizer, GENUTINE® and GENUVISCO® Carrageenans.

A Better Way of Life

For centuries, coastal communities have relied on the sea to support their way of life. However, aquaculture or aquatic farming is only decades old. CP Kelco began farming seaweed in Zanzibar in 1990 and helped to establish the ZANEA Seaweed Company soon afterwards for a local support base.

It has played an important role in improving the standard of living here – especially for women, who make up around 70% of the workforce and obtain a meaningful cash income for their skills. Their success can be seen in the increase in bank accounts in the area, improved homes and infrastructure, and, most importantly, the number of children receiving an education.

This year, a new hospital will open on land donated by CP Kelco and ZANEA Seaweed Company. Its location was specifically chosen to support women in more remote areas of the community, where having nearby maternity care is critical to avoid complications.

Through grants from its nonprofit Huber Helps™ program, CP Kelco recently purchased a solar water pump for one of the villages, providing clean water for up to 2,000 people.

In addition to training in sustainable farming methods, all material, including ropes and seed stocks, are provided to farmers free of charge. On a yearly basis, CP Kelco supplies and distributes materials valued at over $150,000 USD. Over 300 new boats as well as planting structures, drying facilities and new shelters have been donated.

CP Kelco is securing a sustainable seaweed aquaculture in Zanzibar so it can remain a source of livelihood for generations to come. The seaweed itself acts as a bioremediator and filter. A fast-growing algae, seaweed is one of nature’s most effective ways to fight carbon emissions, absorbing nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It utilizes energy from sunlight and takes up excess nutrients from the water to assist the ocean’s ability to fight harmful algae blooms that lead to fish kill.

Improving Education Opportunities

Prioritizing resources to improve education in Zanzibar is also a big part of CP Kelco’s commitment to the community. In the early ‘90s, only 62% of school-age children in Zanzibar were enrolled in primary schools according to the Zanzibar Ministry of Education. Through the Huber Helps™ program, CP Kelco has built classrooms, provided yearly donations of school supplies to the children, sponsored equipment and tools, and renovated school buildings for more conducive learning environments. The transformation in the community over the years has been significant.

A 2021 UNICEF report on the children of Zanzibar estimates that 85% of boys and girls are now enrolled in primary schools.

The travel distance to school can often be a key factor in school attendance, with children in rural areas often facing the longest travel times. When one of the employees at ZANEA Seaweed Co. shared how far his children had to walk to the nearest school in his district, we took action. We collaborated with the Huber Helps™ program and SOS Children’s Villages to raise $135,000 USD to support the construction of a new school, Chamboni Primary School.

CP Kelco Completes $60 Million Citrus Fiber Capacity Expansion Project

Strong Customer Demand & Market Potential Are Key Drivers
Behind New Production Line

ATLANTA (Apr. 29, 2024)CP Kelco, a global leader of nature-based ingredient solutions, has completed a $60 million expansion in production capacity for its citrus fiber product line, based on strong customer demand and market potential. With this significant expansion, the company has ample capacity to support current and future customers’ citrus fiber supply needs.

The production line expansion for NUTRAVA® and KELCOSENS™ Citrus Fiber in the company’s facility in Matão, Brazil, increases the total capacity to approximately 5000 MT, establishing CP Kelco as a leading citrus fiber supplier to food, beverage and consumer product manufacturers worldwide. This expansion provides options to incrementally expand capacity even further in the future based on customer needs.

Launched in 2019, CP Kelco’s citrus fiber products are highly versatile and unique ingredients upcycled from citrus peels, a byproduct of the juicing industry. With the continued growth in consumer demand for clean-label, sustainable products, citrus fiber addresses the need for nature-based and easily recognizable ingredients in a variety of food, beverage and personal care products.

“We are delighted about reaching this important milestone in our growth journey with citrus fiber, which continues to demonstrate tremendous versatility and potential across many application segments and geographic markets,” said Didier Viala, President of CP Kelco. “As a result of strong collaboration amongst our global team members and customers since its commercial launch in 2019, our citrus fiber has evolved into a robust product line with growing interest and demand, especially from those interested in meeting consumers’ needs for sustainably sourced and label-friendly products.”

“We look forward to serving even more customers and application segments with the significant expansion of our citrus fiber production capacity,” Viala added.

NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber supports dietary fiber intake and offers unique water-binding, texturizing and stabilization capabilities in a wide range of food and beverage applications, from condiments, dressings and soups to bakery goods, dairy and plant-based products. In personal care products, KELCOSENS™ Citrus Fiber serves as a gentle emulsifier alternative, providing stabilization and a light skin feel to help product developers create SENSational textures, from serums to gels and luxe creams.

In 2023, NUTRAVA® Citrus Fiber became the first citrus fiber in the industry to achieve upcycled certification from the Upcycled Food Association, now part of WhereFoodComesFrom, Inc. Then, in March 2024, KELCOSENS™ Citrus Fiber won the prestigious Cosmetics & Toiletries  Allē Award for best new natural/bio-derived ingredient.

Innovating to Reduce Plastic Usage

The global theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet vs. Plastics. When it comes to consumer care and plastic, the better choice is to “reduce” instead of “recycle.” Most products are packaged in single-use plastic and recycling rates are extremely low: The British Beauty Council estimates that only 9% of packaging is recycled. As formulators know, personal care and home care products are largely water-based. Reduce or eliminate the water and there’s much less product to ship, lowering freight costs as well as opening up new packaging opportunities.

How Pectin Can Help You Reduce Sugar in Fruit-Flavored Drinks without Losing Mouthfeel

Consumer – and government – interest in reduced-sugar beverages is on the rise. So far, approximately nine U.S. jurisdictions and more than 50 countries have implemented a consumer tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. Globally, consumer-driven nutrition scores are also affecting product placement and purchases.

Heavily influenced by the longstanding health and wellness megatrend, “low-/no-sugar” and “real” ingredients are among the top positioning claims influencing consumer behavior.

While consumers want less sugar, they don’t want to sacrifice taste and texture. According to Innova Market Insights*, the top reasons why people consume fruit-flavored drinks are because “they taste great” and their “kids like them.”

According to Food Navigator, the global cost of sugar is also on the rise and expected to climb higher this year due to poor weather conditions in major growing regions of the EU, India, Thailand and Brazil.

Consumers are sensitive to changes in beverage consistency, viscosity, flavor release and mouthfeel. Formulators must find innovative ways to preserve the texture consumers crave while reducing sugar.

How Pectin Can Help

GENU® Pectin is upcycled from citrus peels, an abundant byproduct of the juice industry. So, you could say it’s a natural for juice drinks. This easily recognizable, label-friendly ingredient can also help when you want to use less sugar in your formulations, too. Pectin adds viscosity and body to mimic a full-sugar mouthfeel while also enhancing the fruity flavors of your beverage. Process tolerant, it’s become a beverage formulator’s staple for:

  • Thickening acidic beverages.
  • Improving flavor release.
  • Providing long-lasting stability.
  • Creating a wide range of mouthfeels.

See if our GENU® Pectin is the right solution for your
reduced-sugar beverage formulation.
